Material and design are separate decisions
WILDEN groups diaphragm materials into rubber, thermoplastic elastomer and PTFE families. A material name does not identify the complete diaphragm assembly. Shape, supported stroke, backup components and pump compatibility also matter. Begin with the precise fluid duty and then confirm the design available for the selected pump.
Review every exposure condition
List the normal process fluid, additives, cleaning chemicals and any occasional flush. Record concentration and temperature ranges, including startup and cleaning. A material that appears suitable for the main ingredient may respond differently to the finished mixture. Avoid using a room-temperature compatibility entry as blanket approval for a heated duty.
Add mechanical demands to the review
Chemical resistance is only one part of service life. Abrasion, solids, flexing duty, suction conditions and operating speed can affect results. A maintenance history should describe the damage pattern and operating conditions, not merely state that a diaphragm failed. Photographs and cycle or operating-hour records make the review more useful.
Use the compatibility guide as a screening tool
Consult WILDEN material guidance and the model-specific manual, then have uncertain mixtures or severe duties reviewed. An insufficient-information rating is a reason to investigate, not a positive approval. Do not substitute a material simply because its generic trade name sounds similar to the installed elastomer.
Keep the installed configuration controlled
Record diaphragm material, design, part number and any supporting components. Confirm the matching wet kit before purchase. If a material change is approved, update both the maintenance list and the operating limits used by the team. Recheck the decision when temperature, product formulation or cleaning chemistry changes.
